Matt Morse and Hersh Ajgaonkar of PointBridge provided a great overview of SharePoint 2010’s new features and improvements. Here are some the highlights:
Office documents can be viewed and edited directly in the web browser without requiring the installation of any software on the client. Matt mentioned that this will also enable editing documents at the same time. Concurrent editing will even work if one user is working with an Office 2010 rich desktop client. Microsoft is clearly closing the gap on web applications such as Google Apps or Zoho.
The new Office 2010 applications will be even more SharePoint aware, which includes the ability to view and edit meta data directly with Excel or Word for instance.

The first day of the SharePoint Conference 2009 featured an energetic keynote from Steve Ballmer spiked with previews of Microsoft SharePoint 2010. The presentation focused on the developer-centric SharePoint capabilities.
The Dosensio booth 1005 was frequented heavily during the day and numerous companies showed their interest in the seamless Windows Explorer integration.
After the exhibit, Jeff Willinger and Ross Freedman from RightPoint Consulting hosted a SharePoint networking event at the Mix Lounge high atop THEHotel. The weather was perfect to enjoy the beautiful view on the strip from the lounge’s balcony. A lot of SharePoint know-how in one place provided a great environment for socializing.

Despite the economic downturn that also contributed to the first ever drop in Microsoft Windows sales, Microsoft SharePoint sales are driving. With more than 100 million sold licenses and deployments in more than 17,000 organizations, Microsoft SharePoint is one of the fastest growing products in Microsoft’s history.
